In 2025, I took my daughter to Seoul for the first time. It was a personal trip - but I'm a clinician. I can't turn that off. I visited two dermatology clinics for treatments while I was there, curious to experience firsthand what the rest of the world was talking about.
When I came home, my clients couldn't stop asking questions. Where did you go? What did you have done? I want to do that - but how do I know which treatments are right for me? How do I find a clinic I can actually trust? They were overwhelmed by what they were seeing on TikTok and Instagram. Influencers queuing up for the same clinic. The same three treatments. No clinical context. No accountability.
That moment clarified everything. The clinic had an enormous social media following. Their reception area was immaculate - clearly built for content. But beyond that front-of-house? I was treated in what amounted to an office cubicle. The consultation was cursory. The hygiene and safety protocols were not what I would accept in my own clinic, or refer any client to.
This is the gap nobody in the K-beauty space is talking about - because most of the people talking about it don't have the clinical background to see it.
